George Clooney pulls worsted wool over fashion mags eyes

Julia Roberts

Attention Vogue, InStyle and all you other hoity-toity rag mags that keep putting George Clooney on your best-dressed Hollywood men list. The acclaimed actor-director-producer has been pulling the worsted wool over your eyes for a decade.

“I’ve been wearing the same [Armani] tuxedo for 10 years,” Clooney admitted backstage at the Critics' Choice Awards Monday night.

“And I won 'best dressed' three years in a row for the same tux. What are they gonna do? It’s a tux. Guys are much luckier than women when it comes to dressing for these things."

“But, as Stan Rosenfield just pointed out, I do change my underwear," said Clooney, rolling his eyes at Rosenfield, standing nearby. "Thank you, Stan: my publicist and lingerie buyer.”

So how does Clooney feel about Julia Roberts, his old “Oceans 11” love interest, who also wore a tux (albeit not as well as George did) and presented him the Freedom Award?

“I don’t like her,” he snapped, with a straight face. “I’ll tell you that right now. I've never liked her.”

“No, seriously,” he admitted. “It was great. I was really surprised when they called and said that Julia wanted to present the award. I was very flattered.”

Yeah, yeah. But what's he gonna say? "No, don't let her"?

The award for Best Trailer goes to..

Before the 17th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala - honoring Charlize Theron, Felicity Huffman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Shirley MacLaine, David Cronenberg, Terrance Howard, Thomas Newman and Michael London -  got cranking Saturday night, the 1200-strong formally attired audience was inexplicably treated to …  trailers for a slate of upcoming 2006 tent pole studio films.

The evening's emcee Mary Hart, that ever-so effervescent “Entertainment Tonight” hostess, introduced “films that may just be contenders for next year's Oscars!"

Then the trailers started rolling for Johnny Depp’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible III,” and Tom Hanks’ “The Da Vinci Code.”

“Bet that (“Code”) will give Tom Cruise a real run for his money!,” quipped Hart.

Up next, Brad Pitt's “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “X-Men 3,” Jennifer Aniston’s new romantic comedy, “The Breakup,” Julia Roberts and Dakota Fanning in “Charlotte’s Web,” Superman Returns,” “Miami Vice” with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, Daniel Craig as the new James Bond in “Casino Royale,” “Dreamgirls,” with Beyonce Knowles and finally, Oliver Stone’s untitled project about the World Trade Center bombing, breathlessly billed by Hart as “the first film about 9/11!”

What, no popcorn?

And the presenters are....

The stars are starting to align for the Golden Globes.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Jamie Foxx, Natalie Portman, and Emma Thompson will present awards at the 63rd annual Golden Globes, taking place on Jan. 16 at the Beverly Hilton.

Leonardo DiCaprio

No official word on which star will present which award. But according to Barry Adelman, executive producer of the Golden Globe awards show, it's customary for last year's winners to present in their winning category. "It's not a hard and fast rule but we usually ask last year's winners to come back and present awards for best actress and best actor."

That could mean that Leo, who won a best actor in a dramatic movie for "The Aviator," will present in that category. It could also mean that Foxx, who won for "Ray," will present for his winning category, best actor in a musical or comedy movie. And since Portman won best supporting actress for "Closer" last year, well, you figure it out.

As yet, there is no word on who will perform the coveted task of presenting the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award. This year the honor goes to Anthony Hopkins, given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. for the actor's "outstanding contribution to the entertainment field."

The lifetime achievement award requires a careful and painstaking selection process. "We try to be good matchmakers," says Adelman. We go through a research process to find someone who is either a personal or professional friend." Or both.

Adelman recalls past successful pairings: When Dustin Hoffman won his DeMille at the 1997 ceremony, Tom Cruise, his costar in "Rainman," presented it to him. Warren Beatty, one of Jack Nicholson's longtime close personal friends and a professional colleague, presented his pal with his DeMille in 1999.

Hmm. We can't help but wonder if Thompson, who costarred with Hopkins in two memorable and award-winning Merchant-Ivory productions, "Howard's End," and "Remains of the Day," may be the lucky lady who hands the distinguished British actor his overdue DeMille.

Then again, the DeMille presenter could also be....

Julia Roberts, Ferré's new face

Julia Roberts

Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts has signed up to become the new face of fashion label Gianfranco Ferré.

The "Erin Brockovich" star will appear in the design house's new print advertising campaign, which will launch in January '06. And most fashion seers suspect that the star will also wear Ferré whenever she has the chance this awards season.

But Roberts reportedly wasn't the first choice for the job. One source told Us Weekly, "They wanted Katie Holmes but she said no, because she was pregnant."

Well, of course. Besides, Tom Cruise probably doesn't want Katie doing anything too physically demanding — like modeling — that might upset the first fetus.

Besides, Katie's really busy getting all those at-home sonograms.
