Drew on makeup, cleaning penguins and learning to floss
No expensive designer cosmetics for get-real Drew Barrymore.
But the actress wasn’t above slipping into an expensive designer dress and heels to announce her new role as the face of that affordable drug store staple, CoverGirl Cosmetics. On April 11, news crews gathered at the Four Seasons Hotel to hear/see the actress/producer/documentary director and self-confessed “makeup junkie” - springtime fresh in a blindingly bright yellow Carolina Herrera frock and leaf green Christian Louboutin heels - talk about her exciting new project/partnership and exciting first major cosmetic contract. Did I mention that it’s exciting?
“After I met with them, I got so excited and my excitement grew over weeks and months,” Barrymore enthused. On another level: “It’s the accessibility of CoverGirl that really impressed me as well as the positivity, the ubiquitousness and the fact that they are so unalienating of people.”
Huh? It's okay. You're not crazy. That's what we call Drew-Speak. You get used to it. Besides, she's just so adorable when she makes up words.
How does it feel to become a modern CoverGirl Icon? “I can’t believe they asked me,” Barrymore said from her stool onstage, as she carefully crossed her legs and smoothed an errant tulip-hem, asking her PR minders to check the view from the TV cameras to “make sure I look like a lady.” Smoothing the deal is the fact that when Barrymore was young she used to “paper my bedroom walls with the CG ads featuring models Carol Alt, Cheryl Tiegs, and Christy Brinkley.”
Barrymore – who has recently been shooting a documentary for the World Food Program on location in Kenya - will also be involved in her first CG TV commercial, doing things like helping pick the director. “I’m an aspiring filmmaker and this is all a venue to express my creativity.” CoverGirl will also aid/fund her personal philanthropic efforts. "As a company, they are so involved in so many good works. When I heard about their penguin cleaning project, I said, ‘Sign me up! Easy, Breezy, Beautiful!”

Asked what her favorite CoverGirl cosmetics were, Drew blurted out,
“Mascara!” and asked Esi Eggleston Bracey, GM of CoverGirl Cosmetics
North America, if she could talk about an exciting new mascara.
Eggleston Bracy shook her head. That product won’t be launched for a
few months. “Right now, there is LashExact,” said the CG exec. The new
one will be introduced by Drew in a few months.
Does Drew have any beauty tips to impart to her fans? “I wash my face
every night. It’s so important to wash your face before you go to bed.
Then you can put on new CoverGirl makeup in the morning!” she said,
giggling. Then an afterthought. “Oh, and I just learned how to floss!”
Oh, wow! Me, too!
