Who ruined Jennifer's Oscar night?
Who was to blame for poor Jennifer Hudson's disastrous Oscar de la Renta brown gown and metallic silver bolero jacket? None other than that champion of fashion risk-taking himself, Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley, who also styled her for Golden Globes. He curated Laura Ziskin's Oscar retrospective fashion show in early February and was Oscar's official style critic on the red carpet Sunday night. Yet he still found time to force Jennifer into wearing a gown she didn't like on Oscar night.
Here's what went down and why...
Having ended up on many fashion critics "Worst Dressed" Oscar
lists, Hudson admitted the next morning on "The Today Show" that the
brown gown wasn't her first choice. She would have preferred another one. Maybe one that wasn't so tight in the back that it
pushed up her back flesh when she took off the metallic bolero - also
insisted on by Andre - inside the Kodak Theatre. Did I mention the flare collared silver bolero also made her look like Sister Sledge?
Now come reports that Jennifer was planning on wearing a custom-made Roberto Cavalli gown, arranged by her usual stylist Jessica Paster.
Now I know why Jessica was so frazzled at the Armani party the night
before the Oscars. She literally begged the valet guys to get her car
fast and was almost in tears over a fashion emergency with her client.
"When Andre found out she was going to wear Cavalli, not Oscar, he totally queened out and started screaming about how he was responsible for getting Jennifer on the March cover of Vogue, how she owed him, and she had to wear the Oscar de la Renta or he would look like a fool," says my source. "It was almost as if he had money riding on her wearing Oscar." Hmmm....
Sunday afternoon, poor Jennifer caved. But her dis-ease showed as
she gamely tried to make the best of an Oscar dress she didn't want to
wear by shoving her hands deeper and deeper into her pockets while she
walked the red carpet.
"No doubt he told her to 'Work those pockets, girl!"" said a well-known TV fashion show host. "It looked like she was digging around in her dress for something the whole time."
Maybe she looking for a knife to slit her wrists. Or Andre's throat. At least she was able to change into her favorite frock to go to the post-parties. She looked lovely in the Cavalli at the Vanity Fair bash.
This is the trouble with egomaniacal celebrity stylists. Oscar night was about Jennifer, not her clothes. And for a stylist to insist that a nominee wear something that they are not comfortable in on one of the most important nights of their life ... Well, that's a crime of fashion.
If this is true, Andre should fly back to New York or Paris or crawl back under whatever slimy rock he crawled out from. What you did is unforgivable. And Jennifer, you deserve better. Next time stick with your gut and don't let anyone tell you what to wear.

Too much brown all around--Jennifer should have went with a color that contrasted her beautiful brown skin. But that jacket really had to go! The gown was a little on the bland side also. Well next year when she's asked to return to present the Best Supporting Actor award, she'll wear something more stunning and appealing.

Your title "what ruined Jennifer's night" is misleading...she had a wonderful night from what I saw...and as for the brown dress & silver jacket, I've seen it several times and you know, it's growing on me. It's radical and different and I kinda like it. Maybe Andre's taste isn't off the mark after all.

Personally, I thought the brown dress was pretty...it was the JACKET that spelled d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r! If you ask me, Jennifer should've been allowed to pick what she liked and what would make her feel most comfortable. IMO Andre Leon Talley was being a selfish jerk...and a wannabe Svengali...and he should be ASHAMED of himself for it!

The bolero jacket is kinda strange. A full lentgh coat with less of a star ship vibe would have been kinda cool with long sleves. Either way, I actually really liked the dress underneath it. I thought the brown color was really pretty...Either way...
Theres an interesting article in Vogue this month about her. In it, Tally describes that in her fittings for the Golden Globes, Vera wang made her two dresses. The first was the navy gorgeous gown that she won in. The second was a brown colored floor length with a small bolero jacket. It says that she told vera that she choose the blue one because she wasnt fond of the brown one.
That just seems really odd. First off...What are the chances... and second, if Andre knew this, then why did he force her into something similar.
Either way, like I said...I liked the brown part without the jacket.

At least it was the last day of the awards season, and she went out with a bang. I've learned over decades, wear what makes you comfortable and presentable. I just felt from reading all the news here on envelope, that Andre had too much control over Jennifer, and I'm sure she's glad to be home and away from all the madness.

On the ABC red-carpet pre-show I recall Andre barking to Jennifer (paraphrased) "Enjoy your win but not too much and don't talk too long when you make your speech that's boring!"
