Did Mel Gibson go Mad Max?

Melgibson_queen_6355824_600Is Mel Gibson ready for "Lethal Weapon 5?"

Sure sounds like it. If you buy the report on TMZ about the actor/producer/director's behavior (anti-semitic racial slurs, profanity, threatening police officers) after his Thursday June 27 arrest for drunk driving in Malibu.

Four pages of what TMZ alleges is the original police report certainly suggests that Mel needs to start going to meetings again.

Or perhaps the “Braveheart” Oscar winner (Best Director, Best Picture) has just been spending way too much time making movies about the apocalypse, doomed cultures and ancient wars.

His new film, “Apocalypto,” deals with the decline of the Mayan Empire and a young man who flees the dying kingdom rather than be sacrificed to the Gods. It’s due out in December.

His next one is called “Warrior,” about Boudica, a peasant woman who rose to lead Britain against the Romans in 61 AD and who was posthumously crowned Queen of the Empire.

One theory is that he just went postal after seeing a screening of Oliver Stone's “World Trade Center” and realized that he shouldn't have turned down the role of Sgt. John McLoughlin to direct “Apocalypto.”

Frankly, I think the “WTC” role Mel should have gone for is that of Dave Karnes, the real-life former Marine who, after watching the towers fall, felt compelled by God to go to the still-burning site and search for survivors. That brave, if slighty unhinged, patriotic commando part sounds tailor-made for the Mel Man.

Hey, maybe Mel’s defense for this arrest will be to pull a Winona Ryder. He could say he was doing research for his new role in another film he’s producing called “Sam and George.” It's about two friends who reunite after one (Gibson) gets released from prison after serving twenty years for a crime he didn’t commit.

Yeah, that’s what I was doing. Role research, dammit!

But at least Mel had the good grace, er, sense to profusely apologize in a statement released on Saturday, July 29....

Photo Credits: Gosh, Mel Gibson looks completely sane at a press conference in Veracruz back in October 2005. Wonder what happened to set him off this week?
Queen/WireImage

On Saturday, Gibson released the following statement:

"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the LA County Sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person. I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said. Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry. I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."

This is so ridiculous , just let it go people. I happen to be Jewish Orthodox and i do not take what he said personal. It does not hurt my feelings that he said Jews are to blame regarding any wars . I feel for him, demons that he is fighting with each day. Alcholism is the real issue here. He needs help! Why do people continue to go on with this? I have to agree with the gentleman Robert regarding Ted Kennedy he killed a young women due to his being intoxicated, yet because he is a Kennedy he got away with it. Thank goodness that Mel was caught before anyone got hurt due to his being irresponsible, due to his heavy drinkiing. I will continue to pay to see his movies.
Lets move on to important matters, like Health Care, the War and getting our kids back home and making DAMN sure that Hilary Clinton Never becomes President then we really will have something to talk about.

I think the photo with this online piece says it all....too much tequilla, too little sanity. Mel is a human being, but he is one that is flawed with an addictive personality. He may even be a depressive. All of this would be somewhat genetic, and something he would have to treat as if it were any other chronic disease, such as bronchitis or diabites. He needs to take his medicine, and his medicine at this point would be rehab.

As for the comments, why does it sound like he was trying to pull a suicide by cop scene, like his character from Lethal Weapon would have done? It was as if he was trying to get the arresting officer to shoot him. After the tripe that came out of Mel's mouth, I am sure the cop was tempted.

The reason the Jewish Community is so upset by these comments is because many Jewish leaders have reported Mel was an antisemite for years, and they thought Passion of the Christ may have been antisemitic. Mel's father is an avowed antisemite, and I think Mel was raised that way, hence the Jewish community anger. Mel may not be cognizant how antsemitc he may be if he was raised in an environment like that. Not making excuses for Mel. Just saying that this is something that is tucked away in his childhood psyche somewhere that he has not dealt with - and needs to A.S.A.P.

Also, the lovely sexist remarks were also something he should apologize for. I wish someone would get angry about that.

Is his wife going to stay with him? I hope they all get into some kind of family therapy, so that his kids will get a chance not to end up like this.

And to think I used to have a crush on old "Mad Max" Mel. Wow. He had me fooled. Glad I got over that crush years ago. I much prefer "real men" to screen images anyway.

remember what happened when dolly parton said jews run hollywood?

she had to apologize for saying the truth,i don't like mel gibson but come on

there are some serious things happening in the world.does his outburst warrant

this much coverage????

This is not a matter of judgemental. This is a matter of an attitude that has proven to be fatal to a lot of people and is the root cause of all that's happening in the Middle East right now. Anti-Semitism has killed countless millions of Jews over the centuries by some really horrible means because "Christians" have been told since they were toddlers that "The Jews killed Jesus Christ", and this attitude has been passed down through the centuries. Certainly Mel's father with his tirade of Holocaust denial has been passed down to his son. Childhood teachings are almost impossible to break which is why this pus of hate has remained intact for 2000 years. Anti-Semitism has got to go! I am a churchgoing Christian and I'll say it again. Anti-Semitism is a scourge of the ages and it's got to go!

One of the best bumper stickers I have seen about drinking is: "Instant ass****, just add alcohol". And no less tequila, Gibson’s choice of poison for that fateful evening on the town- one of the most mind bending forms of alcohol- it can turn a pilgrim into a surly, raving manic saying and doing things totally out of character, as Gibson and the whole world is now being reminded of on a 24/7 basis- ahhh, to be a celebrity.

As an ex-alcoholic, I learned the hard way that when the next day after a binge requires a profusion of apologies for a bad case of embarrassing running-off-at-the-mouth and knee-bending thanks that no one was injured or killed from DUI, it just isn’t worth it. Sobriety is golden!

As is always the case with public figures who stumble, Gibson has provided a windfall of fodder for the late night shows and gossip columns and at least that segment of Hollywood is chanting, “Go Mel!“ while laughing all the way to the bank. The silence of the rest of Hollywood might have something to do with who wants be hypocrite enough to “cast the first stone”?

Gibson seems contrite and his apologies are well stated and I am certainly no one to question his sincerity, but only time will tell if he is able to maintain sobriety, although his celebrity driven public scrutiny should prove helpful in that regard. I wish him well.

Now can we get back to the more pressing issues such as: The whole human world at war with itself and the environment?

rachel

wow, comparing George Lincoln Rockwell to Mel Gibson....extremist comments at best....
Mel Gibson should have to apologize and make it up to the Jewish community through actions...if he wasn't sorry about it, then i would be extremely disappointed and he would completely deserve this outcry - even if I "like his movies" (come on, give us a break, some people aren't that superficial) The point being, he is sorry and as long as he does - through his actions and words - whatever it is to rectify this situation, we should forgive...he said horrible, horrible things and did a terrible thing by driving drunk - putting others lives in danger....but for those people who have never done something they incredibly regret, you cast the first stone, while the rest of us, try to learn from our mistakes to become better people...that is what you do when you screw up - assume responsiblity, pay the consequences, and then try to learn from it - to better yourself - it sounds like Mel is doing all three.....

john brodey

What a bizarre range of comments. Blatant anti-semitism (Jewish payback for being cut out of the Passion windfall) all the way to saying that his driving drunk doing 80 on PCH is more disturbing than his comments. Well, the truth is that the Jews not only didn't start all the wars of the world but they didn't get him drunk and enable him to be a danger on the road. People are arrested for DUI all the time who DON"T say racist or hateful things. Why are his actions more contemptible than his comments? The fact is, liquor is truth serum. Nobody has ever said something while drunk that they didn't truly believe on some level. Whether it's the ugly drunk who tells his wife that she's fat or the guy who says that his boss is an asshole. Inebriated people are just more inclined to share what they think deep down inside. The devil didn't make him do it anymore than he made Ted Bundy a serial killer. Gibson is an anti semite and the outpouring of support he has received from fans includes a shocking proportion of disparaging comments about Jews. A big deal? I think it is any time someone in the public eye displays an intolerance and hatred for another ethnicity or religion. We all make mistakes? Well, Jimmy the Greek paid for his ignorance as did Dodger G.M. Al Campaneris Because you like his movies, he gets a free pass to because it's just his opinion and he's entitled? Wow, good thing George Lincoln Rockwell wasn't also an action star or we'd have people saying that Naziism is just a personal choice. No wonder this country is a mess, it starts with the lack of integrity of it's citizens. As Jefferson said; we do get the kind of government we deserve.

Robert

Everyday this is news. People get arrested everyday for DUI. being a former Police Officer, I arrested my share in the day. 90 percent of them always had soemthing racial to say and made threats. So what's the big deal. Intoxicated people are not rational people, they say lots of dumb things. Remember the police just took away their freedom. So Mr. Gibson berated some Jews, would it had been different if it were Blacks or Hispanics or Asians? Not likely. All these minorities looking for angles , trying to get there 15 minutes of fame at everyone else's expense. We are all bigots in one way or another. How many times have all these people who are doing all the belly aching made a racial slur, or told a racial joke, or even laughed at a racial joke. This america, we are all minorities, that's what makes our country so great. We don't need all these crybabies, thin skinned idiots. Why don't all you liberal idiots get together someplace and cry to each other. When you grow up then come and join society. We'll take you back..... Let leave Mr. Gibson alone or get on your soap box and complain about all the DUI suspects arrested daily around the country. Be sure and review each arrest report and interview the arresting officers to make the arresstee did'nt use the "J", "N" "C" "B' word when he was arrested. Let's get realistic you bunch of crybaby idiots.

Mark

Excessive alcohol usually is revealer, not a concealer of a persons real self, for better or worse. What you see in Mr. Gibson's arrest report is the real Mel, warts and all. At least we don't have to wonder anymore, if we ever really cared in the first place.

John

I can't believe that with the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians, including children, on both sides of the conflict in the middle east... that Mel Gibson's drunken ramblings are news on any level.

Frankly, I'm disgusted by the U.S. approach of letting Israel kill hundreds of Lebanese over the capture of two Israeli soldiers who (near as we know) haven't even been killed yet.

This entire situation is ridiculous. Both sides are guilty of acting like children in the middle east conflict and I would say both sides need a SEVERE time out.

And if I hear one more Jewish community spokesman talk about how horrible Mel Gibson is, I'll puke. Yes, he said bad things. Get over it.

He didn't kill anyone and we should ALL be thankful he was stopped by police before he did.

gary

I am outraged. Yet again another Hollywood heavy being cut slack because of his money, power and name. If his father is a Holocaust denier, it appears the apple does fall very far from the tree.
He's a Anti Semite. Period. He should admit to it and stop his publicist, handlers, and agents trying to convice us all otherwise. It's insulting to us all.
How many times has Mr. Gibson taken money to make movies from Jews involved with or heads of studios in Hollywood?
I guess that's ok.
With so many hateful people in the world already, do we need need another overpayed, coddled, entitled actor to be spewing words of hate?
He doesn't deserve to be forgiven.
Enough is enough.

rachel

have any of you ever made a mistake before? Have you said something you feel awful about or done something you know you shouldn't of done? If you haven't and are perfect, then go right ahead and judge away, but most of us have screwed up and what is important right now is that he apologized and will hopefully begin the process to take action and actually show people he is sorry and wanting to change. If he wasn't taking full reponsibility for his actions, it would be a different story.

Steve

Mr. Gibson is just another Hollywood airhead who has never made a movie worth seeing and who would best serve humanity if he would transport himself to the outback with a lifetime supply of Fosters and Cuervo, and STAY THERE.

Juliano in the OC

IN VINO VERITAS! In so many words means: when you are drunk you pretty much say the truth...your true feelings and so. But then again, how can you blame Mel for being honest about his believes. Yes, I do think He is an anti-semite but in America you are not supposed to be what you want to be because everybody has to be polite and a bit fake. So, it's not polite to be anti-semite..so don't be! It is the same thing when you go to Georgia or Texas...the majority or a large part of people do not like blacks and oh boy! Don't you dare saying so or you are in trouble! But hey, you can say it between you and your friends in your white fences homes. It is what it is and the media and a bunch of "good citizens" are making such a big deal out of it. By the way, Mr. Gibson is not very far from the truth when saying the Jews have been the cause of wars around the world....at least the important wars so far. He probably does not like them for this reason too, but not liking somebody deos not mean that you want them dead...you just don't like them. Deep inside there is a huge amount of people from pretty much every continent in this world that do not like Jews (but they don't say it because it's not polite...here we are back to square one). This is a fact. EVEN JEWS KNOW THAT!!!! Some jews are ashamed to be one for that very reason. We could talk about this forever and reach no point. Bottom line is, some people don't like Jews some others don't like Blacks or Italians, Arabs and so on but if you have this feeling deep in your soul why would you have to repress it?!?! I honestly think it is ok not to like and of course it is not ok to kill because you don't like. But Mr. Gibson never said kill the Jews they are the cause of all wars. Hey, you can like apple pie and don't like lemon tart, so , why do you have to make yourself like lemon tart. It's ok not to like lemon tart but it would not be ok to crash it if you don't. Mel, it's ok to apologize for your phisical and verbal actions. That makes you a considerate person but if you have to get on your knees (and looks like some people want you to do this) I would loose respect for you as a man. Wheter you are a movie star or a garbage collector you are still a man and do not let anybody take that away from you. Next time, play it safe! Have a few drinks and start critisizing Italians....nobody would care.

Lucy

I am sick and tired of America giving passes to people involved in the Entertainment Industry. A perfect example? O.J. Simpson. Mel was completley wrong to say what he did about the Jews and the fact that his father believes that the holocaust did not happed just adds a log to the fire. I know numerous people with numbers tattoes on their arms who will claim differentely, Mr. Gibson. And Mel, did you forget that the majority of the people you do business with in the Entertainment Industry are Jews? You should be ashamed of yourself for saying what you did. Yes, we live in America, yes people are allowed to believe what they want to believe, but there is a huge difference in beliefs based on facts and believ based on stupidity.

Ruth

Mel Gibson is just another alcholic . Alcholics call their kids stupid and say they hate their wives but really they are just lashing out. He is dealing with the root cause his drinking. As a nation we should come along side him and say just get sober so you don't kill yourself and anyother person on the road. Anything else is really secondary. We are praying for him and hope he can overcome this terrible burden.

vasnik

Thanks Mel! His rant has actually inspired me to design a sweet tee:

Oh puuuuulease! Another loaded movie star making an ass of himself. Not any different than hundreds before him. Get over it already. Just because you are famous and have money doesn't mean you are intelligent too.

Look at Sean Penn, Julia Roberts, Robert Downey Jr. and half of the world leaders.

Leadmagnet

Freudian Slip? maybe. Overwhelming Media Coverage on particular crisis'es in the Middle East leading to a episode of Touret's Syndrome? Probably. Its good that Mel is making his own movies now, because the semitic elements of Hollywood (still reeling from the backlash from the huge success of Passion) now get to play the Pharisees condemning Mel before the Sheriff of Jerusalem, err....Los Angeles. Was that a long run on sentence? Definitely.

So the gentile had a few pops and flapped his gums. Bid deal, right? Well it is a big deal, about a 400 million dollar in my bank account at your expense big deal. Mel is now paying the piper for cutting the yiddish mob out of the loop for "Passion", and he'll never live it down. They'll beat his Irish Aussie ass from here to Ayer's Rock for his diatribe that, if people were honest, is pretty accurate.

Rick

That pic of him makes him look madder than a hatter and a lot like Chas Manson! I believe every word he said in his drunken stuper to be his true feelings. I am Catholic and am ashamed of his comments. We all certainly don't feel the same way!

Steve Mapes

Mel revealed his true character or lack thereof. Mel's words of contrition are not enough. Only his future actions will determine whether he is truly on the road to recovery. Can he be forgiven? Sure but it is up to him.

Sheryl

I continue to be astounded that what people are upset about his what Mr. Gibson's drunken mouth SAID, rather than what his drunken ass DID.

PCH. DRUNK. 80 MILES AN HOUR.

Certainly people have the right to be offended by his remarks--I'm one of them. But I'm a helluva lot MORE offended by what he did.

And I'm even MORE offended by a media and a cultual mindset that's insisting on taking him to task for the stupid statments rather than the murderously dangerous behavior!!!!

mark

Right, Hillary Clinton did call someone a "f*ing j-word", but Foxman and his Hollywood cronies still love her. Foxman dogged Gibson's "The Passion.." as anti-semitic. Non-sense. I saw more people crying in the theatre because it was a story of the ultimate sacrifice. He's a another bias idiot no different from Gibson. If anyone dare critique his people, they will be dragged into their synogues or in front of the press, forced to weep and beg for forgiveness, so they can hope to get their job back. This is America, anyone should be free to say anything without being dragged into submission, drunk or sober.
